The university issued a news release Monday that says the university is “deeply troubled” that individuals may be intentionally exposing themselves to the virus with the hope of being paid more from a plasma donation center for plasma that contains COVID-19 antibodies.

Sacrificing their well-being to make a treatment more widely available, same as vaccine trials.  I don’t see why thy shouldn’t be compensated for it.

Free market, baby. If they really need the cash, they also can sell a kidney!

I had that thought as well, but they are also putting other people at risk of infection who don’t want to be infected. Testing a drug, or selling a kidney, only affects themselves.

It’s my blood, I’ll use it as I see fit

Though this is a perfect case for explaining perverse incentives.

52 year old me: That’s crazy, stupid and dangerous

19 year old me:  I’m invincible and could use the money to buy beer

Rexburg, Idaho  is a sad place and there is not much in the way of employment.

There’s not much in the way of anything in Rexburg - employment or otherwise. :P

Couple of things. First, getting sick and ruining your semester for which someone is paying significant tuition is dumb. Second, good luck trying to prove intentional contraction in the lawsuit that ensues after the University expels a kid . It’s a toothless warning, as I’m sure general council will tell the administration. Kids will eschew parties for more underground methods. Third, there is no mention of whether these people then self isolate. If they are not spreading disease, it’s awfully hard to make a case for a public health danger. Unless of course a person becomes one of the minority that gets serious complications and needs hospitalization. In which case, see my point one.

Well, in general (and as one my music history  professors was fond of saying, “All generalizations are lies”), college students don’t always make the most responsible decisions.

I’m sure general council will tell the administration. Kids will eschew parties for more underground methods.

Covid lollipops!

I don’t know what you’re talking about. College students are the most educated, enlightened,  and forward-thinking group in society. Just ask any one of them!
